The Sword

Unaware that he’s the missing heir to Nether’s throne, half-breed outcast Dain fits in nowhere, and ends up at Thirst Hold on the very edge of the Dark Forest. Taken in by its kindly master, Dain must contend with a spoiled, arrogant nemesis – Prince Gavril, who both hates him for being pagan yet seeks to use Dain’s special powers in his quest to find the missing Chalice of Eternal Life. While in Nether, a girl named Alexeika sees Dain in a vision, and loses her heart to this handsome boy who may be real … or only a myth.

{The opening novel of the trilogy, The Sword, The Ring, and The Chalice, which has since become a continuing series of stand-alone novels alternating between the two kingdoms of Mandria and Nether.}

DC: I toyed around with the idea of what became The Sword for a couple of years before I found the opportunity to write it. By then, it was clawing to come out. What was supposed to be a tight prologue chapter about Dain’s father Tobeszijian turned into 100 manuscript pages of story set up. In the end, I left it in place rather than whittle it down. It was a creative risk that puzzled some readers until they figured out where I was going, but it felt right to leave it as it was in terms of the story arc across the entire series.
