In the opening book of The Ruby Throne trilogy, Emperor Kostimon has ruled the land for 900 years, but his dark bargain to achieve immortality is faltering. Although his time is running out, he still intends to choose a new bride. Will it be the spoiled and pampered Lady Bixia or Elandra, the outcast raised as a servant in her father’s house?

Out in the provinces, a boy named Caelan E’non has been expelled from school and sent home in disgrace. But his father’s displeasure with him is nothing compared to the tragedy that will soon befall Caelan and his family, one that will start him on an adventure he never expected.
{New editions of The Ruby Throne trilogy came out in 2004. I was delighted to see them back in print, especially with fresh, gorgeous new cover art.}

DC: This was my first attempt at writing a trilogy and my first foray into fantasy. Elandra is my favorite character. I think many of us can relate to Caelan’s frustration with his father wanting him to follow a career path he has no interest in.

I came up with the magical qualities of severance and sevaisin in order to juxtapose emotional coldness with empathy, while extrapolating how they could be applied to the healing arts … or war.
