| In Mandria, Queen Pheresa is crowned at last, but she must contend with treachery and betrayal on all sides from her parents, the Church, her Sebein enemies, and even trusted members of her council. Meanwhile, a deadly plague spreads across her kingdom. |
| DC: This part of Pheresa’s story is very romantically focused, but
it also serves as a transition from what’s happened in previous books
to what’s being set up to occur next. Rather a lot is coming after
this book, with Mandria teetering on the brink of future war, but I felt
it was time to tie up some loose ends and turn my attention to the characters.
Sir Perrell is introduced as a new character, and serves as Talmor’s
rival for Pheresa’s hand. He gave me the opportunity to explore what
kinds of pressures can part a good man from his honor. I also deal with Talmor’s family, bringing forth a little of his background which has been alluded to briefly in The Queen’s Gambit. I really enjoyed writing the confrontation between Talmor and his father, and look forward to doing more with the brothers. |
