The Chalice
In the conclusion to the trilogy, The Sword, the Ring, and the Chalice, when Lady Pheresa is struck down by a poison meant for Dain, both he and his rival Prince Gavril set off on a dangerous quest into Nether to find the Chalice of Eternal Life in order to save her. But their uneasy alliance is soon shattered, with Dain drawn away to meet his true destiny among the rebel forces.
DC: I very much wanted Dain to emerge as a heroic figure in this book, finding his own destiny as well as somehow redeeming his father. The time he spends with King Verence of Mandria shows him how a king should act, but he’s still pretty much a naïve teenager under all the brave deeds and big talk. He can imitate kingly behavior pretty convincingly in front of his new subjects, but in reality he hasn’t much clue of what he’s getting into as a sovereign.

Alexeika’s story arc through the trilogy shows her circumstances getting steadily worse as she goes from being a favored daughter to desperate rebel leader to fur trapper to prisoner to horse thief. Being far from perfect, Alexeika makes her share of mistakes in this adventure along with everyone else.
